Podcast Script + Pictures

^ I believe this is a perfect picture for the podcast.  This is an example of what referees are under every single game they officiate.
^ A picture with me and my team who are from the ages of 7-10.  This is an example of what grade school teams look like.

^ A picture of a young referee who, like Chuckie, is trying to make it up the ladder in the referee rankings.

High School Referring vs. Grade School Referring

Complete Show Length in Minutes: 6 min 50 sec

Episode 1: Topic: The challenges of referring high school basketball

Intro Music Clip: Title: “Lets Get Ready to Rumble!” (Michael Buffer) Time: 20 sec

Intro: The Opening Tip-Off: Time: 1 min 30 sec

Welcome! I am Eric Ely, and this is my podcast, “High School Referring vs. Grade School Referring”, where I will discuss the differences between the two, and why one is harder than the other. In today’s show, I will explain the different challenges that arise before the game, during the game, and after the game. For anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to referee a competitive basketball game, it is a lot harder than one might think. I have been referring seven to fourteen year olds for the past two years and let me tell you, it works up a sweat. You might think I mean running and sweating, but not that. I mean the pressure and comments I receive from the players, coaches, and parents. Right when I thought I had it hard, I interviewed a high school referee who has experienced a lot more from referring older players. For today’s show, I will relate my interview with Chuckie Hughes and his thoughts on referring, with my thoughts and compare the two together. Chuckie Hughes has been referring for a total of eight years. He has referred grade school basketball for 5 years and high school basketball for three years.

Segment Music Clip: Title: Get Ready for This (2 Unlimited) Time: 20 sec

Segment: Importance of Controlling a Game: 3 min

Before the game, a referee will stretch out around center court to get ready for the competitive game that is about to be played. This is very important for the referees to do because although they might not be running as much as the players, but they will be constantly running up and down the court to make sure that they catch every little detail that takes place. The first comparison I will talk about is how many referees are present for a grade school game versus a high school game. The standard amount of referees for a grade school is usually two, but can sometimes require three if it is down to the division championship. High school games always require three referees for a game unless one referee becomes ill or injured while the game is being played. This is very important to make sure that almost every violation is called and to make sure the game flows at the right pace.

The most important part of referring a basketball game, or even any sporting event, is to control the people around you. An example of this would be when a coach gets upset about a call and starts to get out of hand, his players will get out of hand, and that will cause the parents and fans of that team to start to yell and argue about certain calls. When a player or coach gets way out of line, the referee will have the option to give that person a technical foul, which will result in two free throws and possession of the ball. Sometimes receiving a technical foul can pump up your team, but at the same time, could cost your team two to five points.

One of the biggest questions that sports fans ask is, “What happens when two different referees blow their whistle at the same time but have no different calls?” The answer to this question can be confusing at times because of the conflict that can arise from the two teams. In a grade school game, the two referees will talk privately about the two calls and the lead referee will have the final say in what the call will be. For a high school game, all three referees will meet and ask the referee who didn’t make a call to make a decision to what he thought it was. It is very important for the referees to make the right call when this happens so the pace of the game stays the same.

End Segment Music Clip: Title: Space Jam (Theme) Time: 20 sec

Ending: The results of the Basketball Game: 1min

The results of a game that a referee does should never reflect the way the referee called the game. There have been so many scandals in the recent past on how referees favored a certain team in order to win a bet or to help out a team. A referee should always call a game the same way for every game no matter what. The style of a referee will be known by many coaches and players, which will result in no drama from the outcome of a game. I believe that not only refereeing a game is a job, but also a privilege. When refereeing a game, make sure to always recognize both team’s coaches and players before and after the game. I would like to thank Chuckie Hughes for letting me interview him and to discuss his answers on this podcast. Remember listeners, next time you are watching or playing in a sporting game, consider what is going on in the referee’s head.

Extra Credit Shape Poem

***MY EXTRA CREDIT POEM.  I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO PUT IT BELOW MY ASSIGNED POEM, WHICH IS THE TIGERS/BASEBALL POEM BELOW THIS.  SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE***

I know that it is hard to see the words to this poem so I will post them here:

My Brother
by: Eric Ely

The person I admire
Is my best friend.
He is my brother Sean
And will be with me to the end.

He has always helped me
Whenever I was in trouble.
And he even
Taught me how to blow a bubble.

He has helped me with homework
Especially when it was hard.
He helped me with math
And even with flash cards.

Sometimes we get in fight
But we always make up.
We were so excited
When we got our first pup.

Even though he is older
We still get along with each other.
No matter what age we are
We will always be brothers.

I chose to write and shape this poem because I am a huge fan of my brother.  He has always been there for me and is really close to me.  I shaped it like an "S" because his name is Sean, and also because he is a senior at Michigan State.  He is a big fan of the Spartans and writes for the Lansing Times.  I believe it was the perfect shape because it symbolizes not only his name, but his love and pride of his school.

Revision from Draft #1

The main source I took for revising my draft came from what comments I received from posting my rough draft in my previous post.  I took the constructive criticism into real consideration, and thought about what I needed to change in my essay.  The revisions I made were to explain how and where I found my articles.  I thought this was a good point because my readers will want to know how I found each article.  If I was reading someone else's essay, I would want to know all the details of finding the articles.  In the beginning of each paragraph, I put how I found my articles, where I found my articles, and why I chose those certain articles.  The next revision I made had to do with the details of my major.  I wanted to add details in explaining what exact kind of technology I wanted to talk about.  I explained my major more, and exactly what I wanted to do in the future.  The reason I made these changes is because I want the reader and audience to be more involved in the reading.  The last thing I want the reader to be is bored starting at the opening paragraph.  I made sure this wouldn't happen and explained the reasoning for my summarization technique.  I believe this was a helpful assignment in improving our research skills as well.  I made this visible by adding it in with my conclusion.  I believe this is important to let the reader know that you enjoyed writing what you did.

Telecommunications Articles

Telecommunications is the science and technology of communication at a distance by electronic transmission of impulses through cable, telephone, radio, or television. I have always been very interested in communications. When I was deciding on the specific part of communications I wanted to do, it came down to broadcasting and telecommunications. Telecommunications just caught my interest more because it had to do with the use of computers and technology. I read three articles about telecommunications and they all had something to do with my major. I took two keywords out of the first article to relate it to the next two.

In his article “The Future of Television Graphics” from Computer Graphics (2008), Samuel Edsall informs that starting February 2009, the Federal Communication Commission is allotting an additional six Mhz bandwidth channel to each station for high definition television. The author develops this assertion first, by providing the advantages for television graphic designers; second, by applying the two major improvements to television; and third, by explaining why this will help the cable industry even more. The author’s purpose is to show that high definition television is a lot more advanced and realistic than regular television. Although at times his writing seems almost opinionated at times, Edsall establishes many facts to back up what he previously stated, and compared the two different styles of television and communication with an audience of all ages.

“Communication” is a keyword that I took from my first article. Not only does it relate to the first article, but it relates to my major. In her article “Network Coding Fundamentals” from Foundations and Trends in Networking (2007), Christina Fraqouli suggests that network coding is an elegant and novel technique to improve network throughput and performance. The author develops this idea by answering questions that one would ask about the new technique. Her purpose is to relate the importance of improving network performance and to describe how network coding works along with its benefits. Fraqouli makes it clear that she is very familiar with the topic and displays this by pointing out the significance for the middle class.

“Networking” is a keyword that reminds me of telecommunications and technology. In his article “A Survey on Networking Games in Telecommunications” from Computers and Operations Research (2006), Erik Altman progresses on different modeling and solution concepts of networking games, as well as a number of different applications in telecommunications that make use of networking games. Altman develops this idea by identifying some of the mathematical challenges and methodologies that are involved in network gaming. His purpose is to include work that has been of relevance to networking games in telecommunications from other areas, in particular transportation planning. Although at times Altman’s writing seems didactic, he is establishing a relationship between an audience with knowledge of network gaming, and an audience without any knowledge of the gaming world.

Reading and summarizing articles that has to do with my major has helped me come in more contact with the subject and its topics. The researching of the articles was also a great way to find information on my major. Telecommunications is a wide field that can come down to any type of technology. Telecommunications can deal with computers, television, gaming, networking, and even cable. When reading the articles, it was important to look for keywords to help understand the material more.

Detroit Tigers Poem

The words of the poem:

Opening Day
By: Don Angel

Listening on the radio for play-by-play,
I hear, "Welcome to Opening Day".
Despite cold temperatures for today's game,
A sellout crowd has came.
I turn my attention to the bullpen.
The starting pitcher is number 10.
Managers present line-ups
Pitcher throws warm up.
Umpire yells, "Play Ball!"
Fielders heed the call.
Innings one, two and three,
No score too be.
Inning five,
Visitors come alive
Back-to-back singles down the line.
Sacrifice fly - position nine.
No one at fault,
But one run results.
Inning eight,
Still not too late.
The home team takes their swings.
A base hit and stolen base, leadoff would bring.
Will this one get a hit?
No, second base smothers it.
Fly ball and a play at the plate.
A perfect throw ends the eighth.
I review the pitcher's stats,
As the visitors come to bat.
Four straight balls and a walk,
Pitching coach comes out too talk.
A new pitcher trots to the mound.
Three feared sluggers shut down.
Bottom of the ninth,
Climax at its height.
An error on a bad hop.
Line drive over shortstop.
Fans express belief,
Even with the closer now in relief.
Double off the fence.
The crowd is in suspense.
Rounding third, anxiously awaiting the final word.
This is what I heard.
"Here comes the winning run",
Safe! and "That's a winner" 2-1.
Spectators approve with a deafening roar,
Seconds later, fireworks would soar.
Baseball and America's pastime is my reason,
I think I'll go to another game this season.

There are a lot of reasons on why I chose to pick this image for this poem. The main reason on why I chose this image is because the poem relates a lot to the Detroit Tigers for me. Ever since I could remember, I would always go to opening day with my father and brother. We would get up real early in the morning to get ready for the big day. This event was so big in my house, that my dad left me miss school for the big game. We would go to Tigers Stadium and sit in the upper-deck.  I still remembering getting a ball in opening day batting practice from Mark McGwire.  I am a huge Detroit Tigers fan, and will always be one.  It took me a lot of work to make this image the way I did, but I did it because that was the first thing that came to mind.  I arranged the words this way because of the picture I also posted.  The real picture of the Detroit "D" is what I looked at while creating my poem image.  I actually had fun while creating this because it was very creative.  I love to create and try new things.  The poem was perfect for me because I love baseball and Opening Day is like a holiday to me.  That is why I chose this poem, and the image I created with the words.

Industrial Pollution
Industrial Pollution is not only dangerous in the United States, but throughout the world. Industrial Pollution has resulted in 50% of the nation’s pollution. Industrial Pollution was first widespread in the 1800s, which was the start of the Industrial Revolution. The problem was mostly caused by the use of fuels, such as coal. Coal is unclean and a poor understanding of the causes and consequences of pollution. There are many forms of industrial pollution, but there are three main forms that do the most damage to the environment. Water pollution, air pollution, and light pollution are the three main forms of industrial pollution.
Water pollution is the contamination of bodies of water that is a result of human activities. The bodies of water that can be contaminated are lakes, rivers, streams, oceans, and aquifers. Water pollution can poison the water, and make food sources unhealthy to eat. Water pollution can result to eurtrophication, which causes algae to grow fast in large amounts. There are a lot of ways to stop water from being polluted. The biggest problem is when people pour hazardous products down their own sinks, toilets, or drains. Another easy way to keep pollutants out of bodies of water is to recycle and dispose of all trash appropriately.
Air pollution is the harmful substances that are being emitted into the atmosphere. Examples of air pollution include smog, acid rain, the green house effect, and hole in the ozone layer. Since Michigan is known for their industry of automobiles, the largest portions of air pollution are from automobiles. Side effects of air pollution can be short or long term. The short-term side effects include headaches, allergic reactions, nausea, and irritation to the eyes and throat. Long-term effects include lung cancer, heart disease, and damage to the brain. When the air is being polluted, soil can become unsuitable for plants. This affects animals and their food webs because they depend on plants for energy and food. One of the easiest ways to stop air pollution is to drive a car that gets at least thirty-five miles a gallon. Another easy way to cut down on air pollution would be to try carpooling, walking, riding a bike, or ride a bus to school or a daily job.
Light pollution is all the unnatural light and is a result of industrial civilization. Light pollution is most likely one of the least known pollutions. When people think of light, they don’t believe it to be a pollutant. Light pollution can increase the amount of headaches individuals receive. It can also cause fatigue, stress, and anxiety. Another major factor that scientists believe is that it can increase the risk of breast cancer. Although it hasn’t been proven, a bigger risk of break cancer is very important. An environmental issue that comes from light pollution is changing the behavior of nocturnal birds, which they use to fly into a lit area. This is the easiest way to cut down on pollution. Only use light when it is specifically needed. Another way is to use lights downwards or use shields to reduce light towards unneeded spots.
Industrial pollution hurts the environment in a number of ways. It has a negative impact on humans and their health. The different pollutants can kill animals and plants, imbalance ecosystems, decrease air quality, damage buildings, and degrade the quality of life. There are many ways to help the environment, which can lead to a healthier world.

Advocation

When I first though about what I wanted to advocate about, it came down to two ideas.  The two ideas I came down to were animal cruelty and industrial pollution.  The reason I came down to these two ideas is because I feel very strongly about both of these topics.  I ended up choosing industrial pollution because it contributes to more than 50 percent of the worlds pollution.

Industrial pollution can consist of many different things.  One of the most common forms of water pollution is caused by dumping of industrial waste into waterways.  This form of pollution causes leakage into groundwater and waterways.  Another form of industrial pollution can impact air quality, which can enter the soil, causing widespread environmental problems.

The goals of my project are pretty simple.  I am going to point out the reasons why industrial pollution is really damaging to the nature of the global environment.  I will show pictures that will describe, just through a visual standpoint, on how bad pollution is for the environment.  I will show pictures of dumping and the results that can happen from this type of pollution.  I will then show pictures of air and ground pollution.  The pictures will show the drastic effects on how pollution can kill not only plants, but animals as well.

I believe that this project will help me learn a lot more about industrial pollution.  I am very interested in the safety of the environment, and what people can do to save the environment.  I will list ways on how people can change the amount of pollution that goes into the air of the environment.  There has to be a way to make business that doesn't involve polluting the environment.
