Extra Credit Shape Poem

***MY EXTRA CREDIT POEM.  I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO PUT IT BELOW MY ASSIGNED POEM, WHICH IS THE TIGERS/BASEBALL POEM BELOW THIS.  SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE***

I know that it is hard to see the words to this poem so I will post them here:

My Brother
by: Eric Ely

The person I admire
Is my best friend.
He is my brother Sean
And will be with me to the end.

He has always helped me
Whenever I was in trouble.
And he even
Taught me how to blow a bubble.

He has helped me with homework
Especially when it was hard.
He helped me with math
And even with flash cards.

Sometimes we get in fight
But we always make up.
We were so excited
When we got our first pup.

Even though he is older
We still get along with each other.
No matter what age we are
We will always be brothers.

I chose to write and shape this poem because I am a huge fan of my brother.  He has always been there for me and is really close to me.  I shaped it like an "S" because his name is Sean, and also because he is a senior at Michigan State.  He is a big fan of the Spartans and writes for the Lansing Times.  I believe it was the perfect shape because it symbolizes not only his name, but his love and pride of his school.

Revision from Draft #1

The main source I took for revising my draft came from what comments I received from posting my rough draft in my previous post.  I took the constructive criticism into real consideration, and thought about what I needed to change in my essay.  The revisions I made were to explain how and where I found my articles.  I thought this was a good point because my readers will want to know how I found each article.  If I was reading someone else's essay, I would want to know all the details of finding the articles.  In the beginning of each paragraph, I put how I found my articles, where I found my articles, and why I chose those certain articles.  The next revision I made had to do with the details of my major.  I wanted to add details in explaining what exact kind of technology I wanted to talk about.  I explained my major more, and exactly what I wanted to do in the future.  The reason I made these changes is because I want the reader and audience to be more involved in the reading.  The last thing I want the reader to be is bored starting at the opening paragraph.  I made sure this wouldn't happen and explained the reasoning for my summarization technique.  I believe this was a helpful assignment in improving our research skills as well.  I made this visible by adding it in with my conclusion.  I believe this is important to let the reader know that you enjoyed writing what you did.

Telecommunications Articles

Telecommunications is the science and technology of communication at a distance by electronic transmission of impulses through cable, telephone, radio, or television. I have always been very interested in communications. When I was deciding on the specific part of communications I wanted to do, it came down to broadcasting and telecommunications. Telecommunications just caught my interest more because it had to do with the use of computers and technology. I read three articles about telecommunications and they all had something to do with my major. I took two keywords out of the first article to relate it to the next two.

In his article “The Future of Television Graphics” from Computer Graphics (2008), Samuel Edsall informs that starting February 2009, the Federal Communication Commission is allotting an additional six Mhz bandwidth channel to each station for high definition television. The author develops this assertion first, by providing the advantages for television graphic designers; second, by applying the two major improvements to television; and third, by explaining why this will help the cable industry even more. The author’s purpose is to show that high definition television is a lot more advanced and realistic than regular television. Although at times his writing seems almost opinionated at times, Edsall establishes many facts to back up what he previously stated, and compared the two different styles of television and communication with an audience of all ages.

“Communication” is a keyword that I took from my first article. Not only does it relate to the first article, but it relates to my major. In her article “Network Coding Fundamentals” from Foundations and Trends in Networking (2007), Christina Fraqouli suggests that network coding is an elegant and novel technique to improve network throughput and performance. The author develops this idea by answering questions that one would ask about the new technique. Her purpose is to relate the importance of improving network performance and to describe how network coding works along with its benefits. Fraqouli makes it clear that she is very familiar with the topic and displays this by pointing out the significance for the middle class.

“Networking” is a keyword that reminds me of telecommunications and technology. In his article “A Survey on Networking Games in Telecommunications” from Computers and Operations Research (2006), Erik Altman progresses on different modeling and solution concepts of networking games, as well as a number of different applications in telecommunications that make use of networking games. Altman develops this idea by identifying some of the mathematical challenges and methodologies that are involved in network gaming. His purpose is to include work that has been of relevance to networking games in telecommunications from other areas, in particular transportation planning. Although at times Altman’s writing seems didactic, he is establishing a relationship between an audience with knowledge of network gaming, and an audience without any knowledge of the gaming world.

Reading and summarizing articles that has to do with my major has helped me come in more contact with the subject and its topics. The researching of the articles was also a great way to find information on my major. Telecommunications is a wide field that can come down to any type of technology. Telecommunications can deal with computers, television, gaming, networking, and even cable. When reading the articles, it was important to look for keywords to help understand the material more.

Detroit Tigers Poem

The words of the poem:

Opening Day
By: Don Angel

Listening on the radio for play-by-play,
I hear, "Welcome to Opening Day".
Despite cold temperatures for today's game,
A sellout crowd has came.
I turn my attention to the bullpen.
The starting pitcher is number 10.
Managers present line-ups
Pitcher throws warm up.
Umpire yells, "Play Ball!"
Fielders heed the call.
Innings one, two and three,
No score too be.
Inning five,
Visitors come alive
Back-to-back singles down the line.
Sacrifice fly - position nine.
No one at fault,
But one run results.
Inning eight,
Still not too late.
The home team takes their swings.
A base hit and stolen base, leadoff would bring.
Will this one get a hit?
No, second base smothers it.
Fly ball and a play at the plate.
A perfect throw ends the eighth.
I review the pitcher's stats,
As the visitors come to bat.
Four straight balls and a walk,
Pitching coach comes out too talk.
A new pitcher trots to the mound.
Three feared sluggers shut down.
Bottom of the ninth,
Climax at its height.
An error on a bad hop.
Line drive over shortstop.
Fans express belief,
Even with the closer now in relief.
Double off the fence.
The crowd is in suspense.
Rounding third, anxiously awaiting the final word.
This is what I heard.
"Here comes the winning run",
Safe! and "That's a winner" 2-1.
Spectators approve with a deafening roar,
Seconds later, fireworks would soar.
Baseball and America's pastime is my reason,
I think I'll go to another game this season.

There are a lot of reasons on why I chose to pick this image for this poem. The main reason on why I chose this image is because the poem relates a lot to the Detroit Tigers for me. Ever since I could remember, I would always go to opening day with my father and brother. We would get up real early in the morning to get ready for the big day. This event was so big in my house, that my dad left me miss school for the big game. We would go to Tigers Stadium and sit in the upper-deck.  I still remembering getting a ball in opening day batting practice from Mark McGwire.  I am a huge Detroit Tigers fan, and will always be one.  It took me a lot of work to make this image the way I did, but I did it because that was the first thing that came to mind.  I arranged the words this way because of the picture I also posted.  The real picture of the Detroit "D" is what I looked at while creating my poem image.  I actually had fun while creating this because it was very creative.  I love to create and try new things.  The poem was perfect for me because I love baseball and Opening Day is like a holiday to me.  That is why I chose this poem, and the image I created with the words.
